The backing I want to use on my quilt is too small so I am using two pieces and would like to know the best sticch for this.
I found that using a straight stitch that is about 16 to 18 stitches per inch so that you will not have to back stitch to anchor. Depending on the loft of your batting press open for thin and to one side for thicker batting.

is salt water bad for fabrics (shirts, pants, quilts, stuff that that)?
Yes, salt is very corrosive to fabric….if you get salt water on them, rinse in fresh water as soon as you can.

There are so many things you can do with a quilt for a child, because the fabric really influences the feel of the quilt. ANY quilt could be for a child, just by using novelty, bright, or pastel fabrics. One quilt you might want to consider is an "I Spy" quilt, where you fussy cut novelty fabrics and work them into the quilt (whatever quilt pattern you choose). For example, you could do a simple nine patch, with every other square a solid color. The prints would be the fussy cut pieces. You make a game of this for the child - "I spy a dump truck," for example, and they have to look on the quilt for the piece of fabric that has a dump truck on it. You can do Attic Window blocks, nine patch or four patch variations, special folded blocks - anything you can think of.
There are several I Spy quilts in the links below, showing the variations you can do. There are also websites that sell "I Spy" fabric packs, that contain small pieces of novelty fabrics. One book that has instructions for a hexagon shaped I Spy quilt is "PS I Love You Two" by Nancy Smith and Linda Milligan. It's also on the HGTV website. Quilter's Cache has a great paper pieced block that works well as an I Spy - see the last link.
As you can see, there are as many variations as there are kids to make them for, and they're not just blankets, but toys. It's a great way to help a child quiet down so they can fall asleep.

My grandmother was a quilter but passed away when i was a child before she could teach me her methods. I am really interested in making quilting a hobby of mine but need to know what i need to buy and learn before i start. any help would be appreciated. thanks!
The very best way to learn is a class (offered through fabric stores, adult-ed, and quilt shops), and you should also try to find a sewing or quilt guild to join. But, I know that's not always possible. For an online site, I recommend 'about.com' - they have a really good series of tutorials for beginners, as well as lots of cool stuff for more experienced quilters. (I assume you already know how to sew, but if you don't 'about.com' also has sewing info.) For a book, I agree about the Fons&Porter "Quilters' Complete Guide" - it's my 'bible'. In fact, I have 3 copies, just so I'll always be able to find one!
Go slow on acquiring tools and supplies until you get more of an idea what kinds of projects you prefer to do. Probably the basic tools to start with are:
- a rotary cutter and 18"x24" cutting mat. I prefer the style of cutter with a 'd'-shaped handle - it wobbles less for me, but look around. The 45mm blade size is probably the most versatile.
- a 6"x24" rotary cutting ruler (I like the kind with yellow and black markings)
- basic sewing supplies (needles, threaders, pins, seam ripper, scissors, iron, ironing board and sewing machine if you plan to use one).
- of course, FABRIC (but first decide on a project, then buy the right stuff for it, including any specific tools).
These are available at many WalMarts and craft stores, as well as all fabric stores. JoAnn Fabrics often runs sales up to 50 percent off - time your purchases accordingly.
A word on thread - do NOT use cheap stuff! Coats&Clark is the lowest quality you should ever buy. Most quilters use 100-percent cotton fabric, so they often use 100-percent cotton thread, and many use only 2 thread colors for piecing - off-white and medium-gray.
Happy quilting, and welcome to the addiction!

I am making a jean quilt and am wondering what size I need to make it for a queen bed.
Standard size of a queen size quilt in the batting industry is 90" x 108". Anything close but not over is considered a queen size. King is 120" x 120". Those are standard size of pre-cut batting NOT what retailers are calling queen or king.
I own a quilt shop & that's my reference.

Im looking for an attractive, easy to package way, to sell quilting fabrics at quilt shows. Any ideas??!! PLEASE!
you could place them in separate boxes - use a cardboard box but instead of a lid, use a transparent sheet so that the material can be viewed from outside without getting it dirty by frequent handling [only genuine buyers get to handle it, or keep swatches handy in a ring] .
you can further adorn these boxes with a couple of dried flowers glued in a corner, satin ribbons, satin ribbon flowers, strings, glitter, bows, thins laces, etc. etc.
Or adorn them with a flower/motif made out of the very same fabric that is being displayed - that way you won’t even need swatches & people can touch & feel the material.
being in a box, you can even display them vertically against the wall, hang a few from the ceiling, nail them on the wall like pictures, & so on. you can even make it thematic / color-coordinated…
hope this gets your creative juices flowing …
all the very best
